questions that we receive about the NPA and the Hobby of Pigeon
Raising we have created a list of FAQ's. Simply click on the
highlighted text to find the answer. If your question doesn't appear
please contact our office.
How do I join the National
Pigeon Association?
You can join the NPA by sending a
completed membership application and appropriate dues to the NPA
Secretary/Treasure.
Where can I purchase NPA
seamless bands, and do I need to be an NPA member to purchase them?
National Pigeon Association
bands may be purchased by anyone.
To place your
band order please download this
order form.
You can also use our form to join the NPA.
I'd like to contact an NPA
representative in my area. How can I do this?
Please visit our
directors page. It contains a
regional map, click on the state where you live, and you'll find out
who your nearest NPA official is. This person will assist you in
locating other fanciers in your area.
I'm just
starting out in the hobby. Can the
National Pigeon Association provide me with any information about
the basic care of my pigeons?
Yes,
we can!
We can put our novice members in
contact with one of our District or State Representatives who will
try to help them. We also have a brochure that explains what our
hobby is all about.
Where can I find literature
about pigeon raising?
Local
libraries often contain copies of pigeon books. There are also
magazines related to various aspects of our hobby.
I have heard about Grand Nationals can you tell me
more?
Our
NPA Grand Nationals
and Conventions take
place in January of each year. These are held in various locations
in the United States to give fanciers in various regions of our
country the opportunity to participate in one of "Pigeondom's" most
prestigious events. Held from Thursday to late Saturday afternoon
our Nationals can, depending upon the location, attract anywhere
from 6,000 to nearly 10,000 quality pigeons. Nationals afford
fanciers the opportunity to compete against some of the top breeders
in the country, meet other fanciers, share ideas, and attend our
annual general membership meeting. One of the highlights of our
Nationals is our Awards Banquet that is held on Friday night, while
another highlight is the NPA Pigeon Auction that allows fanciers to
bid on pigeons from some of the best lofts in America. For more
information about our past Grand Nationals, and upcoming ones please
visit this
page.
Where can I purchase pigeons?
There are a number of ways to locate pigeons for sale. If you are
looking for a specific breed we recommend contacting one of our
specialty clubs. Our
NPA Quarterly Review contains a number of advertisements from
breeders. Advertisements can also be found in pigeon related
magazines. Another good place to buy pigeons is at a pigeon show.
Can you offer any advice about buying pigeons, and
what can I expect to pay for quality stock?
In general it's recommended that
novices purchase the best quality that they can afford. Remember
that in most cases quantity doesn't always produce quality. Before
purchasing breeding stock you should familiarize yourself with the
standard of perfection for the breed you're interested in. Don't be
afraid to ask questions about what is being offered to you. You
might also read show reports in order to learn the names of
successful breeders/exhibitors in your area.
Health
Care
I'm concerned about a health problem that
my pigeons are having. Is there anyone that I can contact?
Yes. Doctor Jon Esposito and
Doctor James Gratz have volunteered their expertise in order to
answer questions regarding
Avian Medicine.
Can you
recommend any books or literature related to health care, diseases,
etc?
The
newest pigeon book on the shelf is Dr Jon and Shannon Hiatt's
"Pigeon Guide".
There are a few other excellent books that we recommend. David
Marx's "A Veterinary Approach to Pigeon Health" contains some basic
easy to understand information. "Healthy Pigeons" by Doctor Ludwig
Schrag covers such topics as the recognition, prevention, and
treatment of major pigeon diseases is a little more complex, and
contains some excellent photographs and illustrations. However this
book was originally published in Germany, and certain medications
mentioned may not be available in the United States.
